Steve Lavey, the pastor of Park Community Church in Lincoln Park (Chicago) posted a link to a YouTube video of John Piper slamming the Prosperity Gospel.
If you’re unfamiliar with the PG, it’s basically the belief that Christians will be more prosperous than the secular world because of the price Jesus paid on the cross. Depending on how you take this, it might not sound so bad. The PG, however, places a strong emphasis on finances and “stuff”. Sometimes it’s referred to as “Name it, Claim it” – if you ask God for something and truly believe you deserve it, you’ll receive it.
Sarah and I used to work at the Family Christian Store in Orland Park, and people would come in with a check in their bible made out for a million dollars because their pastor (from an unnamed church) told them if they put it in there and prayed for it, they would receive the money. This is also the same church where the pastor drove a Mercedes Benz and had a car wash “ministry” to clean it… Seriously…
The video is a little heavy, but it gets the point across.
